Ching Chong Beautiful

"Eye candy"

date: December 14, 2009

Outstanding production values, art and sound offset by some clunky controls and not-quite-there physics. Overall a fine effort, just maybe a little clever with the platforming - see Fancy Pants for a more flowing platform engine.

Shadowreign RPG

"A good, if somewhat generic RPG"

submission: Shadowreign RPG
date: December 1, 2009

Good presentation, introduction and plenty of depth offset by a cookie-cutter generic "kill foozle" RPG plot. Injecting a bit of humour or branching out from the standard Tolkein fantasy setting might serve you well. There's a lot of other cultures you can look to for influence, how about the Mayans? The ancient Persians?

As far as the graphics go, the world feels a bit sparse. Adding drop shadows to the characters might cost a bit of processing power but will add some much needed depth.

Still, an RPG is no easy thing to make and you've built a good engine there! Well done!

Author's Response:

I really like your suggestion in regards to the fantasy setting for the game. I will certainly consider an alternate "theme" for Hands of War II (my next RPG)

Gunny Bears

"A 4.5 score? Really?"

submission: Gunny Bears
date: November 29, 2009

Clearly a lot of work has gone into this, and it's funny and original.

However, you could argue that it's not actually a flash animation, merely a video that's been converted to an FLV and stuck in a flash movie. I would actually think this would be better suited to Youtube.

But a 4.5 score? Come on... that's basically saying this is the best thing that has ever been upgraded to Newgrounds, ever.

As a game designer, I honestly believe it would be a great idea to separate games from videos in the daily top ten - primarily because games require a hell of a lot more work than your average animation.

Anyway, congratulations - original and novel.

November 30, 2009

Author's Response:

I agree and disagree.
The 4.5 rating will go down after a while, Trust me.

Yes, there is Youtube, but you'd have to dig through massive piles of vlogs and garbage to actually get to any decent animations.

The only reason I do animation/stopmotion/live action animation hybrids is because of newgrounds. Alan the Box, Knox, and Dustball have been posting stop motion for years on this website and have been my source of inspriation. (Until just recently, they dropped off the face of the earth.)

Also, yes games are difficult to make, but so are animations. In both fields you have to start out from scratch and take a long time developing an idea whether its Gameplay or Story. You have to study programming languages in coding, but you also have to study motion in animation. They're both equally as hard depending on the quality you throw into them.

I didn't take too long on this animation, and I admit it isn't worthy of a 4.5 score.
But like I said, It'll drop down quick in the long run. That's how the rating system usually goes.

Anyway, thanks a bunch for the review, and keep making kickassy games. =D

Gexin, you're a noob. Take a lie down before you cut yourself with the mouse.

Great game Ben! Classic old-world strategy with a sci-fi skin. Love the explosions and as always top notch sound design.

Exmortis 3

"A fine magnum opus"

submission: Exmortis 3
date: September 9, 2009

A fitting end to an exciting trilogy, all Ben's hallmarks of production, sound design and artwork shine here. Hours of gameplay, puzzles ans secrets to unlock.

As usual it astounds me to read the posts here by the forum trolls. Last time I checked, Newgrounds motto was "everything by everyone" ... not "ONLY FREE GAMES DUDE OMFG WTF"

Rating a game down because you feel like you're "owed" something by a developer is weak. The length of the free component of the game is considerably larger than most games ported here, most of you are flaming the game without even playing through.

What needs to be understood is productions of this quality take many months to build. You're happy to pay a fwe bucks for a throwaway hamburger and a beer, what's the problem with paying some cash to reward the fruits of an indie developer's labour?

The answer is simple. You like the game and want more, it's available to you. You don't? Close the browser and move on.

At any rate, there will always be freeloaders who think the world owes them something - this most vocal of audiences are as mean as they are tight fisted, and not worth losing sleep over.

Kudos on a game well developed, may it bring you success.

Toss the Turtle

"Methinks I have seen this before."

submission: Toss the Turtle
date: August 31, 2009

Suspiciously and remarkably similar in mechanics to my Swine Flu Hamdemic game, which was in turn similar to Kitty Cannon (with the addition of shooting ) and so on.

I can't quite fathom why your game has a rating of 4.6 ,which puts it amongst the highest rated NG games ever....!!!! .... Still, your production values and depth of powerups is exceptional. It goes to show that a tried and true "whack a penguin" style concept, if excecuted well, can be a winner. Well done.

SAS: Zombie Assault 2

"Great game, good atmosphere"

date: July 15, 2009

Well made game mate - lots of nice touches and responsive controls.

To those who are rating this game poorly because of the "payment for optional upgrades" - wake up to yourselves. To build a game of this calibre takes months of hard work from an artist and a coder. Individuals, not giant corporations. People slaving away in their bedrooms after hours and so on.

Many do this without making a cent. You get to play the game without contributing a damn cent to their income , and yet you begrudge them the opportunity to gain some monetary reward?

I copped the same criticisms when releasing my "Swords & Sandals" series and my answer is always the same: This is the way the world works - you try something , if you like it and want more, you should pay for it - the world of gaming is no different from movies, music or any other entertainment medium.

Anyway - well done and keep up the good work - there is certainly a living to be made making quality games, there will always be haters but there's also a wide section of the community who are prepared to support indie developers.

Cheers

Addicitve, challenging and full of the eye candy we come to expect from a Ben Leffler games. Do yourself a favour, put on stereo headphones and enjoy the detailed soundscape of the game.

One point, you do a horrible american accent. I almost deducted a point for that!

Great game to tie us over until ExMortis 3 arrives!

"A whale of a tale!"

A veritable leviathan of a game, this nautical quest is both compelling and confounding. Eerie underwater ambience mixed with terrific water effects and briney goodness make for a great adventure.

The game should be run on a high spec machine, will really chug old machines but Flash Player 10 runs it beautifully.

The game starts off relatively simply - your squid is just a minnow devouring plankton - but it really comes into its own around level 6 or 7 in the open waters. Battling sting rays and orcas as your squid evolves into a terror of the deep is just plain fun. There's not too many undersea games floating round the ocean of online gaming and this is a charming foray into the murky life of crustacea . Simple on the surface, but with great depth.

Alright I'm out of nautical puns....nice work.
